The move to National City coincided with the breaking up of the family as, one by one, the older children began to leave home. Irma, who had never gotten along with her father at the best of times, found a new home in an apartment house owned by a family friend from Wyoming. Edith and Vera quickly followed suit, going to work full-time in San Diego’s fish canneries and boarding in town with a housepainter named Thomas Wright and his wife, Lola.*

But it was Chester’s leave-taking that brought about the most dramatic change. Miles, perhaps due to his own limited formal schooling, had not placed a high value on education, at least where his oldest son was concerned. Whenever he had needed an extra pair of hands at work in Boulder, he had not hesitated to pull Chester out of school. In Wyoming, he had expected Chester to go to work full-time to help ensure the family’s survival—an expectation to which Chester had selflessly bowed. All the same, Chester had continued to cherish hopes of a life beyond basic trade skills and hand-to-mouth wages—hopes to which his father, with his inverted snobbery and preoccupation with providing food and clothing for his large family, remained decidedly unsympathetic.
